Open Source Deployment and Support.
Q. What is open source?
A. All software programs have programming involved. The language and commands used to develop this software is called source code.
Open source software (OSS) is computer software for which the source code are provided under a software license that meets the Open Source Definition or that is in the public domain.
Q. What are the advantages?
A.You can use the open source software without having to pay for it. There are normally two costs associated with all things. For example when you use a car – you have to buy the car [Capital expenditure or Capex] and you have to fill gas/ pay the driver [Operating expenses or Opex].
In open source Capex is very minimal or nearly zero. You only have to pay for the Opex which will reduce your costs.
Q. What do companies like Microsoft do?
A. Microsoft and other software companies develop software packages which are an absolute pleasure to use – they’re the industry standard for a reason.
But legitimate retail copies of the software can cost quite a lot and put a dent in the wallets of small businesses and individuals.
You can use free, open-source alternatives that are widely available on the web that can tackle some of the tasks that the big-brother software packages do on a regular basis.
Q. Can I see some examples of this?
